IEC Spring Conference 2008
The 2008 IEC Spring Conference was held April 6-8 in London and attracted a record of over 220 delegates from 30 countries. Top speakers presented their view on consumer trends, branding and marketing in a digital world, global challenges on animal welfare, managing Avian influenza and the effects from the European cagelaw.
Ovotherm was well represented by it’s CEO Franz Hofer who suggested to have the good news about eggs (www.thinkeggs.com) on all retail packs. A great chance to educate consumers globally – free of charge!
During the Gala Banquette IEC chair Frank Pace presented the “past chairman chain” to Willi Kallhammer (senior partner of Ovotherm) and acknowledged his successful work in making the International Egg Commission a true representative of the global egg industry.
In his response Willi Kallhammer (now President of the IEC) stressed the importance of the “eggworld” to regain it’s credibility with consumers and not leave it to retailers to be the warden of eggs.

A new member for the Traypack Family
After the smashing success of Traypack 30, Ovotherm developed the new Traypack 20. Also this new pack was designed for promotions and is the ideal pack for families who love to eat a few more healthy eggs! The two parts (bottom and top lid) of this new pack are made of R-PET, available with or without label. This pack is designed for eggs up to 73 grams. The bottom lid can be packed automatically or by hand, the top lid will snap on by hand (no additional cost for shrink wrapping). Airflow is secured from all 4 sides of the pack.

Clear Easter Concept in the USA
For the first time an Easter Concept was launched in the USA. The supermarketchain Harris Teeter, longtime customer of Ovotherm International, wanted to encourage kids (and of course adults as well! ) to boil and colour their own Easter eggs. Therefore they put 12 white eggs together with a colouring kit in a glassclear Supersell egg carton for 12 eggs, made of recycled PET.
Their customers liked this idea a lot – especially as already boiled and coloured eggs are not sold in American supermarkets like in Europe.
Harris Teeter stores are known for their very good quality products and can be considered as “De Luxe” supermarkets. Right now most of their shops are in North Carolina, but they are currently expanding into Georgia and Virginia. They use crystal clear Ovotherm eggpacks for 6 and 12 eggs to pack their private label fresh eggs. These are special eggs – which means cage free barn eggs – and are sold at upmarket prices. Consumers just love these eggs!

Carnival in Trinidad
The “Island State” of Trinidad and Tobago with it’s 1,5 Mio people is situated in the southern Caribbean, just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela. This multiracial country has it´s own now very profitable energy resources which led to a strong development of it´s retail sector with most modern shopping centers and excellent large food stores.
In this multicultural melting-pot there is one common interest: Everybody loves to celebrate Carnival! This year it was the first weekend in February and people want to dance, sing and (of course!) drink their rum punches! So working is not the number one interest during this time…Even in the major supermarkets one couldn’t find any eggs in the eggdisplays – because nobody was willing to transfer them from the big cartons in front of the (normally perfect!) displays…But people from Trinidad love to eat eggs and make cakes – so they just took them out there by themselves!

There are two major egg producers whose high level of service has not only improved the presentation but also the consumption of fresh healthy eggs. The number one pioneer is “El Chico” who has introduced clear Ovotherm egg packs close to 15 years ago to their biggest client “Hi-lo” which eventually created the overall consumer demand for “Honest, Safe and Hygienic” egg displays. The second big egg producer “Spring Fresh Farm” was also able to dramatically increase it's turnover and market share by switching to the glass clear options of Supersell, Showcase and Jumbo egg packs from Ovotherm.
Trinidad may not be a huge country but El Chico’s Michael D`Ornellas and the Singh family who own Spring Fresh Farm can be proud that they have taken their country into the top league of modern egg merchandising also benefiting retailers and consumers.

Follow the Star…
… and you arrive in Barbados! A really magic name when you think sunshine, white beaches and vacation. But also an island where the “Bajans”- as they call themselves- are world champions in the consumption of chickenmeat, served really spicy! And of course they love to eat their locally laid fresh eggs.
The pioneer in egg marketing, Mr. Wendell Clarke, has now become President of the Poultry Association – Congratulations from all of us! Ovotherm is proud to work with him and his company “Starchick” since the introduction of the most creative brand “Follow the Star” over 10 years ago – eggs naturally packed in glassclear Supersell 1x12 and 2x6.
Now the honest seethrough packs in the egg display have become the benchmark for highest quality fresh eggs which do not have to hide.

Ovotherm at the Poultry Show 2008
In January the International Poultry Exhibition in Atlanta was again the meeting place for the egg industry from the Americas. Ovotherm´s CEO Franz Hofer and his team Walter Baumann, Octavio Gomez and Willi Kallhammer were able to greet many customers from USA, Canada and Latin America at the beautifully decorated and always crowded Ovotherm stand.
The Vice President of Marketing of Pilgrim’s Pride Mr. Dan Emery came to visit the Ovotherm stand to see the new Traypack family for 30 and 20 eggs and to confirm that “Eggsplus” presented in Ovotherm´s PET dozen pack is still an egg specialty highly appreciated by consumers.
Pilgrim’s Pride were pioneers in developing eggs to become “Functional Food” with much larger amounts of Omega 3, DHA and Vitamin “E” as well as Lutein for eye health, than in normal eggs. Bo Pilgrim, founder of Pilgrim’s Pride, insisted right in the beginning that only a glass clear egg carton from Ovotherm would be good enough for his specialty eggs.
In conclusion Ovotherm´s presence at the Atlanta exhibition was again considered a full success with a great deal of new and interesting contacts with egg producers and retailers.

Glassclear succeeds in Cyprus
Petrides Savvas is the biggest egg producer for Free Range Eggs in Cyprus. Even with a production of 10.000 eggs daily, he can not cover the demand of the market which is even bigger! The free range hens are fed with the especially nutritious Alfalfa Gras and are packed in Ovotherm’s crystal clear Starpack for seven eggs, where consumers can not only see the eggs but also a leporello leaflet (different ones for M and L eggs) containing a lot of information about these Free Range Eggs. Some supermarkets use Ovotherm’s new pack – the glassclear Supersell Vision 3x4 – with a sleeve for security, sealing and also for detailed information.
Petrides Savvas has a production for Barn eggs as well. These are also packed in glassclear eggs packs – what else? - made by Ovotherm. Supermarkets and their customers love to see the eggs without having to open the pack. The Barn Eggs are packed in Supersell 2x6 and Supersell 1x10, but also in the convenient Showcase 2x9.
Petrides eggs are sold in more than 200 shops, including all the major supermarkets of Cyprus like Carrefour (here Petrides Free Range Eggs even have their own cooled display!), Orphanides, Alfa Mega and large bakery retailing chains (Zorbas, Marangos).

„Clearly the Best“ in Lebanon
The Lebanon and Beirut are well known for sometime turbulent news in TV and the print media. But against all odds, Mr. Michel Oubary – distributor of Ovotherm egg packs – is very busy to successfully spread the message of clear egg packaging. Together with his biggest customer, “Hawa Chicken”, he made it possible that in all the major supermarket chains (Monoprix, Spinneys, AOUN) as well as in all the “Hawa” stores consumers and egg lovers don’t have to open the egg packs any more!
“Hawa Eggs” are mostly brown and are packed in Ovotherm’s glassclear Supersell 2x6 and Showcase 1x15. But also the packs for 10 eggs are receiving more and more interest – for example Supersell 1x10 and Jumbo 1x10 for XL eggs.

Supersell 1x12 made of R-PET is being used by “Saveurs Campagnard” and can be seen in most of the supermarkets. Another happy customer of Mr. Oubary is “Lebafarm“. They sell eggs under the brandname "Fré Fré" and show them to the consumers in Showcase 1x15 and Supersell 2x6.

Seng Choon Farm in Singapore
A very special country in Asia is Singapore. About 5 Mio. people live in the cleanest and best organized environment of the region. The biggest retailers are NTUC, Cold Storage and Giant, with hundreds of stores all over the island state.
The only egg producer to serve all these food chains is Singapore’s number one “Seng Choon Farm”. Ovotherm is the preferred supplier of all types of clear egg packs as consumers demand to see what they are buying without opening the packs.
