0n the 4TH of November 2010, CHAOS reigned in shopping areas as German Supermarket chain Lidl opened its doors to customers for the very first time!
Hundreds of Cypriot consumers made their way to the stores excited to see if Lidl, the first discount chain in Cyprus, would keep its promise of "quality buys at smart prices". Outside some customers were getting irritated as there where no shopping trolleys available and people lining up to pay inside confirmed that they were standing in queues for more than 20 minutes.
One of the very smart marketing ideas is that Lidl sells eggs only in crystalclear Ovotherm egg packs where customers don't have to open the packs to see what they buy! Because of this, there are no queues in front of the egg display and customers safe a lot of time.
All the eggs are produced in Cyprus and the "M" eggs (53 - 63g) are packed in crystalclear Supersell 1x12 made of recycled PET drinks bottles whilst the "L" eggs are packed in Supersell 2x6, also made of recycled PET drinks bottles.
In November Lidl has opened a total of seven stores on the island. Three of the stores are based in Nicosia in Lakatamia, Pallouriotissa and Kokkinotrimithia. One has opened in Limassol, one in Larnaca, one in Aradippou and one more in Paralimni. Two more stores opened in December.
